Der Golden Goose Award ist ein jährlich vergebener US-amerikanischer Wissenschaftspreis. Er wird seit 2012 jährlich von der American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)[1] an Forschungsprojekte verliehen, die zunächst als sinnlos angesehen wurden, sich aber später als sehr sinnvoll für die Menschheit herausgestellt haben.
Geschichte
Der US-amerikanische Politiker William Proxmire (1915–2005) vergab von 1975 bis 1988 die monatlichen Golden Fleece Awards für Staatsausgaben, die er als verschwenderisch ansah. Die Auszeichnung wurde oft auch an staatlich finanzierte wissenschaftliche Forschung vergeben. Einige Jahre später griff der US-amerikanische Politiker Jim Cooper (* 1954) die Idee auf, als er scheinbar verschwenderische wissenschaftliche Forschung auszeichnen wollte. Er hob Beispiele von scheinbar obskuren Studien hervorhob, die jedoch zu bedeutenden Durchbrüchen und zu bedeutenden gesellschaftlichen Auswirkungen geführt haben.[2]
Im Jahr 2012 nahmen die Gründungsorganisationen der Golden Goose Awards die Idee von Cooper auf. Sie vergaben die ersten drei Preise an Forschergruppen, deren scheinbar obskure, von der US-Regierung finanzierte Forschung zu bedeutenden Durchbrüchen in der biomedizinischen Forschung, medizinischen Behandlungen sowie Computer- und Kommunikationstechnologien geführt hat. Die Gewinner werden seitdem jedes Jahr bei einer Preisverleihung in Washington, D.C. geehrt.[2]
